I could have done things a lot differently…..
As a CA licensed chiropractic physician, I could have gone the “normal” route and opened a chiropractic mill seeing hundreds of patients a week and making boat loads of money.
I could have chosen to spend 2-3 minutes with each patient and never really took the time to get to know them.
I could have convinced patients that they need the exact same treatment three times per week for the rest of their lives.
I could have turned a blind eye to the fact that traditional treatments for back pain (including chiropractic) provide only a temporary “band aid” for those suffering from chronic recurring back pain and continued on with the same old thing that lacks results.
I could have chosen not to spend hundreds of hours reading every piece of research material on lower back pain I could get my hands on.
I could have ignored the overwhelming evidence in support of intensive spine strengthening for not just relieving pain, but also preventing the pain from returning, greatly improving strength, flexibility and function of your back and helping to avoid invasive spine surgery.
I could have done things completely differently. But I decided to choose a different path. A path where I really get to know my patients and spend the time that needs to be spent to try to help the best I can. I’ve learned a lot over the years through not just being a doctor, but also a patient. And if there’s one thing that really irritates me about health care, as I’m sure it does you, is a doctor that just doesn’t give a crap. One that just wants to rush you in and out and won’t give you the respect of really listening to what you have to say. Let’s face it, we know our bodies better than any stranger. Doctors need to keep an open mind and listen to what their patients have to say so that they can better help us. And the most important part is acknowledging when they can’t help us and pointing us in the direction of someone that can instead of just taking our hard earned money for a treatment that was not in our best interest.
This is a subject I can go on and on about. It’s where our health care system fails us. It’s where doctors fail us. I choose a different path…..
